New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Blog

Alicia Ault

If you’ve gotten this far, it means you looked past the pretty pictures, and you might have stopped and wondered, who the hell is putting this crap on-line?  To borrow a phrase coined by one of my co-bloggers, I have reached advanced intermediate standing as a Jazz Fest attendee, and yet, let me be clear: the expert rung is still far from my grasp.  That achievement belongs to those hardy souls who have slogged it out, year after year, since Jazz Fest began in 1970.

I offer the following as cred for bringing you news and views from JF 2007: I once was a judge at a BBQ contest in Richmond, Virginia.  I have observed live orangutans in their natural habitat in Borneo.  I’m a Safety Third spokesmodel.  Most of the time, I can drink bourbon and tequila in the same outing without vomiting.  I like music.  I got ants in my pants and I need to dance.  I covered Jazz Fest in 2006 for New Orleans Metblogs, to wit:

» The First Three Days Of Jazzfest 2006
» Never Talk Politics With An Indian
» Fest Weekend 2: The Fog Lifts Momentarily
» Everything On The Hog Is Good
» Jazzfest Final Days: Design Parameters Exceeded

My words and pictures have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Miami Herald, Smithsonian, Wired, and on Reuters news service.

I'm a multimedia artist specializing in Flash, QTVR, and 3D modeling, but my preferred title is aesthetic quality control. I have delivered my accumulated wisdom on such subjects as 3D Max, Flash, and photographic VR to the hordes who gather at the Consumer Electronics Show, Digital Media DC, NY Digital Video, the National Association of Broadcasters, and the IVRPA Summit Series.  Formerly chair of the Media Arts and Animation and Game Design departments at The Art Institute of Washington, I now toil under my own banner --  My projects have ranged from work on animations for Volkswagen to fingernail-constructed necklaces to a full-blown workout of my longstanding interest with retro rockets:  Washington DC's new Rocket Bar (

I'm an art school geek, with skins from Rhode Island School of Design and Savannah College of Art and Design.

My cred for blogging the Fest:  After only 2 years of training, I've reached intermediate standing.  I'm a spokesmodel for Safety Third.  My work appeared on HBO's Real Sex(episode 18).  My name's etched for eternity (or until a laser burns it off) on the leg of at least one boy….that I know of.  I photographed and instigated stories for the characters in Alicia’s coverage of 2006 Jazz Fest for Metblogs.  I have some southern roots, ya'll, so I'm good at sharing my beer, my blanket and long winded stories.
